Theme is the underlying message of a story or poem. Theme is a big idea, something you can learn about life in general.

In today's assignment, you will practice determining the theme of Esperanza Rising.

RL5.2 - Determine the theme of a story.

Mini Lesson
First, we'll think about some of the possible themes in Esperanza Rising. We'll compile a list in class, and you can see the list here.

Next, we'll practice finding textual evidence to support our themes. We'll fill out a t-chart to help with that, and we'll do this t-chart with paper and pencil (not on computer). You can see the chart here, however.

Also, make sure you don't confuse theme with main idea!

Today's assignment
When we're finished with the minilesson, you'll use what you've learned about theme and textual evidence to write a short essay. Here's the writing prompt.

What you'll be graded on
  • Have you answered all parts of the question?
  • Have you used complete sentences?
  • Did you use at least 3 pieces of textual evidence?
Need Extra Help?
Look back at the PowerPoint we watched in class about theme from earlier in the year.
