It's June and it's Friday, but that doesn't mean school is over in Mr. Maxim's class! We're still reading Stargirl, and we're still learning a lot of new vocabulary words.

The students also had a quiz today, which including vocabulary words from Stargirl. Here's the quiz they took. So it's June, but we're still learning and having fun in Mr. Maxim's class!

RL5.1 - Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Mini Lesson

Since you'll continue working on your Stargirl Twitter/Blog project today, and since we've talked a lot about what that project involves, there is not minilesson today. You've just got to get your work done! However, you can look back at this lesson to see how to prevent making some common mistakes on that project.

Today's assignment

  1. Finish your blogs and tweets for Chapters 1-9 of Stargirl.
  2. Finish your blogs and tweets for Chapters 18-22 of Stargirl

You'll continue learning difficult vocabulary words from Stargirl today. 

Objective
RL5.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.

Mini Lesson

We'll be determining the meaning of vocabulary words today. There's two main ways you've learned to figure out the meaning of words you don't know:
  1. Use the dictionary, and a website such as WordCentral can be particularly helpful.
  2. Use context clues to determine the meaning of the word. Here's a lesson that will show you more about how to use context clues.

Today's assignment

Today, you'll begin preparing for a vocabulary quiz on difficult words from Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli. 

  • The words that will be on the quiz are available here. Make sure you do list #7 (because you did list #6 last week, remember?)
  • Enter those words into your Personal Dictionary that you have saved on your Google Drive.

What you'll be graded on

  1. Have you entered all 10 words into your dictionary?
  2. Did you include both a definition and a sentence?

Need Extra Help?

  • Check-in with some of the classmates are your table.

Today's assignment

  1. You've got a Google Form assignment that will ask you to use what we learned it today's minilesson to find the best 3-sentence summary of chapter 19 in StargirlBased on how you answer question #1 on the form, you'll have to do some review questions about Stargirl and about Summary statements. These review questions will help you write better Tweets and Comments on your Blog/Twitter assignment.
  2. Once you've complete assignment #1 (the Google Form), go continue working on your Blogs! You should complete through Chapter 20!

  1. For the Google Forms, each question will explain to you what's required, so make sure you read each question carefully!

Today you'll complete the survey available here.

You'll need an access code to login to the survey website.
This survey will ask you to answer questions about your experience as a student in some of your teachers’ classes and as a student at this school. We are asking you to take this survey because your teachers want to hear from you!

As you complete your surveys, remember that the purpose of the survey is to help us all improve your learning experiences in school, so please be honest. No one will ever be able to track your answers back to you. If you feel that you cannot answer a question on the survey you may skip that question.
